Golf
The four key elements of a golf tournament are: golfers, sponsors, event format, and post event banquet. We’ll leave the golfers and post event banquet planning to you. What separates one golf tournament from the best golf tournaments is the sponsors and format.
Whether you are conducting a charity event, a family/friend reunion, a bachelor/bachelorette, birthday party, or just for fun, there is always space for sponsors. The sponsors can be a major corporation, local business, friend, family member, or the golf course itself. There are 6 types of sponsorships; title sponsorship, hole sponsors, contest sponsors, beverage cart, tee gifts, or banquet sponsors. Variations of each of these can be left to your imagination.
The best event format for any golf tournament includes fun contests. Many of these can be combined into one tournament. Don’t overwhelm the event with contests, it will dilute the value. Here are some of our favorites:
Sasquatch Drive: toughest hole, for a team donation, you can drop ball $150 yards from hole – speeds up play on toughest hole.
Magic Circle: draw circle on green, volunteers collect donations (bet) for golfers that think they can land their drive inside the circle (par 3). Winner gets ticket to drawing for ½ pot.
Porcupine Hole: multiple holes on green, instead of one, chance for birdie
Marshmallow Drive: longest drive contest with marshmallows
Vegas: after t-shot, roll of dice determines t-shot to take, 5 and 6 can make up own rule
Lucky 7: par 4, only use a 7 iron, until on green.
Mega Putt: all event attendees mark a ball, surround one green (putting green), all putt at the same time, whoever makes it in hole wins prize. – pay to play, quick game
Wolf: foursome take turns rotating as ‘wolf’. Wolf gets to select his/her choice of partner based on t-shot. This creates two competing teams for each hole, playing for skins, with the potential of a different partner on each hole. Once the wolf passes on a player, they cannot go back.
Snake: last 3-putt on the front 9 buys a round at the turn, last 3-putt on the back 9 buys a round at the 19th hole.
Awards: best costume, loses the most balls, shortest drive
Speed Up Play: Create a 2-putt rule for best ball, Florida Scramble, Progressive Scramble
Florida Scramble: everyone has a drive, everyone putts. Whoever’s drive is used, the foursome skips their second shot
Progressive Scramble: If the group birdies, move back to champion tees. If group bogies, move up to women’s or back to regular tees.

Great ideas, Paul! Thanks for sharing your expertise with us. We just might try some of these…
